what is more accurate a car speedomoter or a sat nav speed indicator?
mentalmickey asked:
Travelling frequently i find that my sat nav speed always appears lower than my car speedo. Journeys always seem to take longer than car speedo would indicate for example, a sixty mile journey at sixty miles an hour should take an hour approx going by the car speedo it takes considerably longer. This appears to be the length of time suggested by sat nav speed.

gps is the best
SatNav without a doubt.
Speedometers nearly always read too high.
Makes it less likely that you will exceed the speed limit.
not had a lot to do with sat-nav’s but speedo’s are very seldom spot on the most accurate way i have found to check a speedo is by using one of the speed sensors you get by the road side that calculate your speed, check them both at the same time and note the difference, this will be how much your speedo is off
Speedos are allowed to under read by upto 10 pct (i.e. when indicating 70 mph speed is actually 63)
They are not allowed to overread.
This is to take into account a number of factors including the size/inflation of tyres and general wear.
GPS will always give a more accurate reading when on an open road as it works out the time and distance between points and caluclates based on that.
In built up areas or where there is a lot of stop go then they will probably take a second or two to catch up though.
If you are driving on open roads then take the satnav as being more accurate.
This is one of the reasons you get people driving at just over 50 in 60s etc as they are trusting their speedos.
I’m really pleased you asked this question. I recently bought a satellite navigation device and noticed the same thing. I wondered which was the more accurate. You have to be so careful these days with so many speed cameras around. Some of the answers on here are really informative.
