What does Nokia maps do? Is it just like sat-nav, and is it free to use or is there a charge?

the phone i want to buy is a nokia 6600 slide, it comes installed with nokia maps
does this mean that the phone has a sat-nav function, or do i have to pay a fee to use this function?
what will i be able to do on nokia maps if i dont pay anything? will i still be able to use it as a satellite navigation?
