Does a Sat Nav have to be stuck to the windscreen in order to know what direct I am driving?

What I mean is if I stuck a Sat Nav to my REAR windscreen, and drove forwards, would it think I was reversing?

    No, it just needs a clear view of the sky so it can lock onto a couple of satellites to triangulate your exact position. If it has a clear view from the back it would work just as well, but you’d be hard pressed to see the screen or hear it if it has voice prompts, so most normal people prefer the front windshield.

    It doesn’t care how it’s oriented. The designers knew that orientation of the unit would be meaningless.

    It needs to be able to see the sky. That’s why it’s stuck to the w/s. That’s the best piece of sky available.
